In 2003, NAVA joined with the ACLI and the Committee of Annuity Insurers to form Americans for Secure Retirement (ASR).  ASR is a broad-based coalition of diverse groups representing the annuity and insurance industry as well as women, farmers, minorities, the self-employed and middle-income workers.  ASR is committed to preventing the consequences of declining living standards and helping retirees maintain a steady stream of income in retirement.

ASR is working with Congress to enact legislation that will give people more control over their own retirement, and help them maintain their standard of living in retirement by making it easier for them to obtain a steady source of income for life.  Since 2004, ASR has supported the Retirement Security for Life Act which would provide that 50 percent of the earnings portion of each lifetime annuity payment would be excluded from gross income, to a maximum of  $20,000 per year.
